Windows generic host problem

I was getting the Generic Host for Win 32 Services Message which led to the system freezing and requiring a hard reboot.

In addition I was getting redirects to unrelated sales sites whenever I used Google. After a couple of weeks of reading blogs and trying different suggestions I finally found a combination of processes that seems to have worked — all free!. All three products found and removed viruses. Finally I ran SuperAntiSpyware to remove any other spyware that may have infected my systems.

For the last 48 hours I have had no re0ccurence of the problem and the overall performance of my computer is the best is has been in a while. I had the same problem as bobeberb. Ran TDSSkiller and rebooted. That stopped the re-directs and possibly the Generic Host error. Ran Malwarebytes. It found 23 Trojans and other malware and fixed them all. I than ran my real time anti-virus AVG anti-virus.

It found nothing. I than ran the SuperAntiSpyware and it found over threats. Thanks bobeberb for posting your solution. Seems to have worked for me also. According to microsoft, this error occurs in windows XP sp2, if security update MS had been installed.

Microsoft also claims, that this problem only occurs in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 SP2 , but it does provide fixes for windows server and windows You may download KB to fix the generic host process error. Alternatively, you can do the windows update manually.

Note that the above patch solution and the following windows update solution works only on computers running genuine Windows and not pirated versions.
